BARRISKILL, George William (1891 – 1916) (Sergeant)

George William BARRISKILL was born on 31 March 1891 in Maryborough, Queensland to parents William Henry Barriskill (b. 11 Apr 1867 - d. 17 Sept 1955, Sydney, NSW) & Amelia Jemina (nee Keith). (b. 23 Apr 1865, Maryborough, Qld – d. 4 Nov 1907, Brisbane, Qld). Amelia is buried in Bundaberg Cemetery – Section – A 8A, Grave 433

He had 4 siblings -
1. Ivy Keith Barriskill (b. 1889, Qld – d. 1962, Qld) married Arthur Leeds in 1913 in Qld.

2. John Robert Barriskill (b. 30 Mar 1893, Qld – d. 1970, NSW) married Gwendolyn F M Simpson in 1933 in NSW .
John Robert Barriskill became a medical practitioner and joined the Australian Army Medical Corps on 7 July 1916 at the age of 23 years, 7 months. Captain Bariskill embarked overseas to England, he was later transferred overseas to France to the 15th Field Ambulance, he was attached to many other units. On June 1917 he was attached to the 8th Field Ambulance. On 4 October 1917 he was gassed and admitted to hospital. On 19 August 1919 he embarked on “Ajana” ex England for return to Australia , estimated arrival date October 1919.

3. Elfie May Barriskill (b. 5 Apr 1896, Qld – d. 1975, NSW) married – Alan E Yeldham (medical practitioner) in 1931 in Sydney, NSW

4. Vida Jean Barriskill (b. 1903, Qld – d. 13 May 1990, NSW ) married Robert V Carter in 1927 in Sydney, NSW.


Georges' father was proprietor & Journalist of the Bundaberg Mail which was established in 1870.

In 1907 & 1908 George attended Brisbane Grammar School and latter he attended Sydney University in Sydney, NSW.

In January 1909 George was working for Colonial Sugar Refinery Company in their Laboratories in Sydney as an Analytical Chemist. He worked at CSR Mill in Childers and from 1912 - 1915 he worked at CSR Companies Hambledon Mill in Edmonton, Cairns, Qld.

On 25 April 1915 George William Barriskill enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces in Brisbane, Qld

Georges' father was proprietor & Journalist of the Bundaberg Mail which was established in 1870.

In 1907 & 1908 George attended Brisbane Grammar School where he received a sound secondary education receiving a good pass in the then Sydney University exams.

In January 1909 George commenced work with Colonial Sugar Refinery Company in their Laboratories in Sydney as an Analytical Chemist. He hold several important positions with CSR at their large Mills notably CSR Mill in Childers and from 1912 - 1915 he worked at CSR's Hambledon Mill in Edmonton, Cairns, Qld.

On 25 April 1915 at the age of 24,  George William Barriskill enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces in Brisbane, Qld. He was at Enoggera Barracks, Brisbane  for about 3-4 weeks before he disembarked overseas with his unit the 26th Battalion on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 24 May 1915.

George died of his wounds, shrapnel to the head from a German bomb in the trenches, near Armentieres. He was taken to hospital but died the next day.
