Also served in the 2nd Black Watch Battalion for about 4 years

TAYPORT AUSTRALIAN FALLS IN ACTION

Mr and Mrs Whitecross, Tayport, has received official intimation that their second son, Private William Whitecross, of the Australian Infantry Brigade, who was previously reported wounded and missing on 25th April, 1915, was killed on that date.  Deceased was 28 years of age , and served his apprenticeship as a gardener at Glamis Castle.  He joined the First Australian Contingent in Melbourne.

Dundee paid a high price for her war efforts. By the armistice, over 4,000 men and several women had made the ultimate sacrifice. Their names are recorded in the city’s Roll of Honour.

There is a Wm R. Whitecross on the Tayport War Memorial which stands at the junction of Craig Road and Dougall Street in
Tayport, North East Fife, DD6 9LD, Scotland.

It is a brick and stone arch with metal gates at the centre. Names of the fallen are on bronze plaques mounted on each side of the gateway.
