105 years ago today, on the 11th April 1917, Lance Corporal James Herbert Brannigan, 13th Battalion (Reg No-1691), labourer from Simpill Street, West Maitland, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at the 1st Battle of Bullecourt, France, age 23.

Born at Islington, New South Wales on the 21st November 1893 (as BRANNAGAN) to James (died 22.8.1933? 

James’s name has been inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Mr. Brannigan’s name has also been inscribed on the West Maitland and Municipal District Roll of Honor (as J. H. BRANAGAN, photos), West Maitland Soldiers' Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

James has been memorialised at his mother’s gravesite at Sandgate Cemetery. CATHOLIC 1- H Com. 124.
