Son of Alexander and Margaret Jane Cargill of Claremont Street, Ithaca, QLD. Brother of George Cargill DCM who returned to Australia on 4 January 1919 having served with the 25th Battalion

William Cargill enlisted in the 6th reinforcements, 4th Battalion 17 May 1915, arrived on Gallipoli on the 4 August 1915 and was killed in action at Lone Pine only two days later, 6 August 1915.

He was still only 21 years of age. His younger brother George Cargill enlisted around the time of William’s death, at only 18 years of age. George won the DCM at Villiers Bretonneux for singlehandedly taking out 5 German machine gun crews.
