The Launceston Examiner reported on 18 November 1943 the death occurred at the Launceston General Hospital the previous day of Mr. Anthony Roy Mills, formerly a well-known Tasmanian amateur athlete. He was an outstanding runner, particularly over half a mile, at one time was Tasmanian schools' swimming champion, and was also a keen lacrosse player.
Mr. Mills, who was 51 years old, served in the 40th Battalion in the Great War, and subsequently married a returned nurse, Miss Margaret Christina MacAulay, of New South Wales. She died in 1931. Prior to the last war he was a member of the Launceston Artillery, and was a leading member of the Launceston Artillery Old Comrades' Association.
Throughout his life Mr. Mills retained his interest in sport. He was referee on a number of occasions for the combined public schools' sports, and frequently assisted at the annual sports of the Grammar School, of which he was an old boy.
Mr. Mills was in the service of the Union Company before the last war, but later joined the staff of the Launceston Marine Board, to which he returned after the war. For some years up to his death he had been in the service of the Customs Department at Launceston.
Mr. Mills was born in Launceston, and was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alma A. Mills. He was a brother of Mr. C. M. (Scott) Mills.
