Biography
William Kinnish was born in Norwood in 1881, son of William and Mary Ann Kinnish. He enlisted in March 1916, at which time he was 34 years old and married to Eva, and their address is cited as Third Avenue St Peters, an inner NE suburb of Adelaide. His occupation was given as 'soldier' and based on the fact that he was appointed as a Captain, prior military service is a given.

William was born on 14 August 1881 in George Street, Norwood, South Australia. The names of his parents are William and Mary Ann KINNISH. William married a woman by the name of Mrs. Eva KINNISH and lived in a house at Third Avenue, St. Peters, South Australia. He attended the Church of England; he was a Christian.
Based on the records from the Australian Imperial Force Project, William enlisted in the war on 25 March 1916. He was ranked as a Captain in the 43rd Battalion, C Company. His unit embarked from Adelaide and was transported by the HMAT A19 Afric on 9 June 1916. During the war, he fought on the Western Front. He was appointed as a Captain and was promoted to Major.
William was Mentioned in Despatches by Field Marshall Haig, the details were published in the ‘London Gazette' No. 31728 on 12 January 1920 and the ‘Commonwealth Gazette’ No. 133 on 1 April 1920
He was given two medals - the British War Medal which was awarded for his service in the First World War and the Victory Medal which was awarded for help to win the war.
He died on the 14 of September 1940 at the age of 59 years old. He was laid to rest at the Northern Suburbs Cemetery, New South Wales
