Acting Sergeant Abercrombie embarked with the 16th Reinforcements for the 8th Light Horse Regiment on the 2nd May, 1916 on the HMAT Uganda (A66). During the voyage on 6th May, he was reduced to the ranks, back to being a Private soldier. In Egypt, he ended up in the 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment (8th June, 1916). Later it states that on 7th August, 1916 that he was “Detached to Horse ANZAC Training Centre & Details from the 3rd Light Horse Training regiment. During this time, he was promoted to Temporary Sergeant (12th July, 1916) and also qualified as a First Class Stokes (Mortar) Gunner at Zeitoun on the 14th November, 1916. He later ended up with the 4th (Aust) Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron after being attached for rations & duty pending transfer to the unit on the 6th March, 1917. During 1918, he had gone to Acting Sergeant (5th Feb), Sergeant, Temporary Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant (14th Sept) then reverted to Sergeant on the 4th October, 1918. On 1st November, 1918 he entered Cadet School for officer training, being appointed Probationary Second Lieutenant on the 4th January, 1919. He was promoted to Lieutenant in due course (8th April, 1919) and eventually returned to Australia on 24th August, 1919. His appointment was terminated at the 3rd Military District on the 9th October, 1919.
