The War never left him

I am one of David Henry Wallace’s grandsons.
David returned from WW1 with one leg missing . I remember the amount of time he dedicated to looking after the stump of his missing leg, chafing or redness would cause get difficulty in using his artificial leg . Most of the time he just used crutches to get around because the artificial legs of the day weren’t that good .

I remember that he still had lots of shrapnel in his forehead that was never removed.

After returning from WW1 we went with his wife Mary Elisa Wallace to Atherton in North Queensland to take up a farming allotment which must have been difficult to do with only one leg.
My Dad , Roy Henry Wallace was born in Atherton.

David and Mary returned to Woody Point in Hardiman Steet where we would visit them most Sundays.

Grandfather never talked about the war but refused to get in my father’s Mercedes in later years .

Grandfather was a great shot with his slipper if we got up to mischief.

I think of Sargent David Henry Wallace often .
