Served and suffered during The Great War, resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.
76 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 19th March 1945, Private John (Jack) Chapple, 35th Battalion (Reg No-6780A), fitter from 31 Albert Street, Wickham, New South Wales and 46 Lewis Street, Maryville, N.S.W., father of two, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. ANGLICAN 2-137. 8.
Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 11th March 1884 (as CHAPPELL), to John and Mary Elizabeth Chapple; husband of Jessie Herron (Hearne) Chapple nee Aitkin (married 1905 in New Zealand, died?) of 21 Pirie Street, Wellington, New Zealand; also Mabel M Chapple nee Mastin (married 1925, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1954), Jack enlisted April 1917 with the 19th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Jack was invalided home December 1918 suffering from trench fever and chronic bronchitis, not being discharged until the 2nd October 1919.
On the 15th May 1920, Jack was presented with the Hamilton-United Ancient Order of Druids (Hand of Friendship Branch No. 470) Certificate.
Mr Chapple’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honor (2nd board, unveiled on the 24th May 1917, 192 names inscribed).
There is no indication on Jack’s headstone that he served in The Great War, so I have placed poppies to honour his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.
Service record states Died after Discharge, 17.3.1945.
Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance.
