William Ernest Coleborne


Disembarked Troop ship at Port Said 14 May, 1915
Rank at disembarkation rank recorded as Corporal.  Army records confirm rank of Acting Sergeant whilst in Egypt. William’s father inquired from the Army, confirmation of William’s rank being Staff Sergeant with 20 Battalion 5th Training Brigade 2nd Australian Division at No. 6 Camp, Rollerston Hills, Wiltshire England. At William’s request to the Army, he reverted to the rank of Corporal on the 24 January, 1917. This appears to have been done by William to get out of training position at Headquarters in England?

Next Of Kin was his wife Agnes ’May’  Coleborne with one child (a daughter May ‘Maisie’ Ruby) of Station Street, Mortdale. William’s father William George Devage Coleborne (____ - 1948) and mother Louisa Christina Peterson Coleborne (____ - 1943) lived at 19 Letitia Street, Oatley. His brother was listed as S.H. Colebourne of 14 Letitia St, Oatley. Family state that William attended Mortdale Public school which he completed.


William was employed as a lithographic Artiste (Printer) prior to his war service.


William was sent to France to re inforce the 18th Battalion arriving on the 1 August, 1917. He was transported to Western front  in Belgium on the 4 August, 1917. William was Killed in action on the 10 October, 1917 in First Battle of Passchendaele.  William was only 26 years of age. He was Re buried at Tyne Cot British War Cemetary  near Passchendaele, West Flanders, Belgium. Burial Zonnebeke West Flanders (West-Vlaanderen), Belgium Plot: 4387. XXIII. C. 3. For his war service William was posthumously awarded the 1914-15 Star, The British War Medal and the Victory Medal.


His death is commemorated on the baptismal font at St. Paul's Oatley Anglican Church located at the corner of Rosa and Neville Street, Oatley and nearby at the Mortdale War Memorial located in the Memorial Park at the corner of Boundary Rd and Oxford St, Mortdale NSW 2223.
