John Stewart CRANSWICK was born in North Motton, Tasmania on 8th October, 1893

His parents were Henry Walter CRANSWICK & Marion Isabel ANDERSON

He enlisted in Brighton, Tasmania on 31st August, 1914 & embarked with the 12th Infantry Battalion - he returned to Australia on 3rd July, 1915 due to Illness

On 22nd May, 1916 he became a Company Sergeant Major with the 40th Infantry Battalion and left Australia once again on 1st July, 1916 on the HMAT Berrima- he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant

John was Killed in Action in France on 13th January, 1917 and is buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Plot III, Row D, Grave 41 and his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial

His brother Thurston George CRANSWICK (SN 815) also served in WW1 and returned to Australia but died from Illness in hospital in Launceston, Tasmania in 1920
