Bill was the eldest of six children of William David Roberts (born 1840 in Lancashire, England) and Martha Cartwright (born 1849 in Lancashire, England). William was an Able Seaman on board the Hochelaga when he arrived in Sydney, NSW in 1860. Martha arrived with her parents on board the Caribou in 1859. In 1876 William was a Mariner when he married Martha in Balmain, Sydney, NSW. They settled at Rozelle, where William was a Mariner. He died in 1919 and Martha died in 1915.

Bill was a Storeman in Goulburn, NSW when he married Theresa Eliza Cox (born 1877 in Murrumburrah, NSW). In February 1916 Bill enlisted in the AIF as a Driver (Service No:167) with 36th Infantry Battalion. In 1918 in France he was promoted to Sergeant and served with the 36th Infantry Battalion A Coy, and was Discharged in January 1920. Brothers David Thomas Roberts (Farrier, Service No:893), and George Henry Roberts (Corporal, Service No:17515), and Brother-in-Law Colin Herwald Dickson (Driver, Service No:10619) also served in WWI.

Returning to Sydney, NSW Bill and Theresa settled at Parramatta in Sydney where Bill worked as a Clerk, He died in 1957 and Theresa in 1958
