Biography
"No. 1635, Driver CLAUDE M. PERRY, 5th Divisional Ammunition Column, and late of 12th Reinforcements, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, only son of Mr and Mrs W.G. Perry, of 22, Wheaton-road, St. Peters, was killed in action on October 9. He was born in Jeparit, Victoria, on July 2, 1898, and afterwards went with his parents to Rochester, Victoria, coming to Adelaide when nearly five years of age. He received his education at East Adelaide Public School, and afterwards at Norwood District High School, for three years. He studied for electrical engineering, and not being able to get employment in that business on account of the war he secured a position in D. & W. Murray's. He enlisted on August 26, 1915, and embarked on November 18. He spent six months in Egypt, and went to France in June, 1916. He had his furlough from July 14 till July 24 of this year, which he spent with relatives in Tulse Hill, and visited Scotland. He was an active member of St. Peters Baptist Church." - from the Adelaide Advertiser 12 Nov 1917 (nla.gov.au)
On his AWM Circular for the Roll of Honour (static.awm.gov.au) his mother Eva wrote that Sergeant F. P. Green (who Claude served under... for 1½ years) had said of Claude;
"He always showed commendable readiness and zeal in the discharge of his duties, wonderful powers of personal control and faultless conduct. At any time day or night, raining or storming, and under circumstances of considerable difficulty, Claude, willingly and cheerfully executed his arduous task with great determination and skill."
