I don't normally do extra posts like this one but wanted to share this story.

After researching 1,460 Australian WW1 War Graves in UK & Ireland I am glad that I have not become immune to the deaths that I research. This story saddened me & I am glad that stories like this still affect me.

James Frederick Hines was born at Upper Manilla, NSW, Australia & enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 10th November, 1916 stating he was an 18 year old Farmer from Gilgai, NSW.

As James Frederick Hines was under the age of 21 years, his parents were required to sign their consent for their son to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force for active service abroad. James Charles Hines & Eliza Ann Hines both signed their consent on the “Application to Enlist in the Australian Imperial Force” form.

From The Medical History form for Private Hines - he was examined at Armidale on 10th November, 1916 & declared his age as 18 years & 1 month. His Physical Development & Pulse rate was recorded as Poor.

Private James Frederick Hines embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Beltana (A72) on 25th November, 1916 with the 9th Infantry Brigade, 33rd Infantry Battalion, 6th Reinforcements.
He was admitted to to Ship’s Hospital on 26th November, 1916. The Hospital Admissions form recorded the following: “Case admitted 9 am in bad condition, very chilled & mottled …..” His condition was listed as Acute Pneumonia & Acute Myocarditis.

Private James Frederick Hines died at 9.45 pm on 26th November, 1916 on board HMAT Beltana while at Sea from Pneumonia.

Private James Frederick Hines was buried at Sea on 26th November, 1916. He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

From information provided by his mother for the Roll of Honour – James Frederick Hines was aged 17 years, 9 months & 3 days at the time of his death.
Private James Frederick Hines is not listed as one of the 182 First World War Boy Soldiers at the Australian War Memorial. I have submitted Private James Frederick Hines' name to the Australian War Memorial to be included as a WW1 Boy Soldier.
