James Fraser Harvie was born on 11th of September 1897 in Sydney, New South Wales to William Broughton Harvie and Florence Louisa Harvie. His family lived in Ultimo, Sydney, where he spent his boyhood.
He attended Sydney Technical High School, where he received an award for his academic excellence on Speech Day in 1913. A year after graduating high school, he enlisted into the army. Harvie joined on 10th May 1915 at the age of 19, embarking from Sydney on board HMAT Berrima. He held the rank of private in the 20th Battalion, ‘A’ Company. Harvie fought in Gallipoli, Turkey, stationed at ‘Walkers Ridge’ and ‘Russell's Top’ from August until the evacuation. He left with one of the last batches of soldiers to Cairo, Egypt. During this period, he had an absent without leave offense (AWOL), which led to his transfer to the Camel Corps.
After Gallipoli, in February 1917, he underwent an appendectomy and spent some time in the hospital. When he recovered, he was transferred to the 1st Infantry Battalion, and then to the 12th Australian Light Horse Regiment in September 1918, before later being transferred to the 4th Australian Machine Gun Squad. After the armistice, he joined the Australian Mounted Division Headquarters before returning to Sydney on HMAT Burma in September 1919. He earned the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory medal for his contributions to the war.
After returning to Australia, he worked as a textile worker and fitter and married Winifred May Bullock in 1944. Although information about his life after the war is limited, Harvie lived a long life. He passed away peacefully on the 3rd of April 1980, aged 82. He left behind his wife. He is commemorated with a plaque in the New South Wales Garden of Remembrance, which acknowledges his service to Australia.
