Stanley Ward Haines was born in Middle Brighton, Melbourne in 1889. His father was John Haines of High Street, Fremantle, then Hereford St, Victoria Park. Stanley signed his enlistment papers on the 31.1.16, and took the oath at Maribyrnong Victoria on the 13.5.1916, aged 27 years. At the time of his enlistment, he was a chauffeur and Presbyterian. He had 9 months previous service in the A.I.R. Stanley was described as being 5 feet 7¼ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 37-39 inches, sallow complexion, brown eyes and black hair. Initially he was appointed a Private with Service number 26158. He saw service with the Blackboy Hill Infantry from 31.1.16 – 5.2.16. Then from the 12.2.16, he was appointed a Gunner with the 10th Field Artillery Brigade and embarked in Melbourne on HMAT Orsora on 1.8.16. On the 31.12.16, was transferred to the 4th D.A.C, then on the 8.1.17 to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade. On the 4.1.17 he was appointed a Driver to complete his establishment. He was wounded in action on the 7.5.17 and transferred to England from the 13th General Hospital in Boulogne with gunshot wounds to his face, right arm and shoulder. He rejoined his unit in France on 24.11.17, then was sent to England with bronchitis on 13.3.18. He returned to Australia on the 9.12.18 per Argyllshire, with general debility. Stanley was discharged on the 9.3.1919. In 1932, he was a WA Government Railway employee aged 43. Stanley died on the 9.12.1932 at Northampton Hospital and was buried in the Methodist portion of Northampton Cemetery.
