Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

The son of William John and Jane Gander, of Toowoomba, Queensland. George Robert Gander was for four years before he enlisted a member of the Toowoomba Fire Brigade, and was entertained by his fellow firemen at the station before he left Australia, being presented with a pocket wallet and fountain pen. He was also a member of the local Salvation Army band.

George only joined the 52nd Battalion at the front on 18 February 1918, and was killed in action when the unit was defending the railway embankment at Dernancourt against an overwhelming German assault.
