Private Edgar Little


Pte Edgar Little enlisted in the AIF in May 1917 and was assigned to 10th Reinforcement 5th Pioneer Battalion. He embarked on the HMAT Aeneas from Melbourne to Britain on the 30th October 1917. His ship arrived in Davenport England on 17th December 1917. He was transferred to the 32nd Battalion on 1st January 1918 and stationed at Codford England. On the 9th of March 1918 he reported sick the clearing hospital and then admitted to 3rd NZ Hospital with Measles and was then discharged on the 24th of April. He was admitted to the 3rd NZ Hospital again on the 26th May 1981 with a poisoned index finger and discharged on the 15th June 1918. Edgar embarked for France on the 1st July 1918 and arrived on the 3rd July 1918.

He was taken on strength in the field with 32nd Battalion on the 13th July 1918 and went to the "front". Edgar was killed in action on the 27th July 1918 and was buried near Corbie France.

His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial in France along with over 60,000 other Australians who died in World War One

"...3867 Private Edgar Little, 5th Pioneer Battalion. A farmer from Talia, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 30 October 1917 aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) for Devonport, England. On 2 January 1918, while in training in England, he was transferred to the 32nd Battalion. Pte Little was hospitalised twice with illness before eventually proceeding to France to join his battalion on the Western Front near Ribemont in early July 1918. Pte Little was killed in action near Corbie, France, on 27 July 1918. He has no known grave and he is commemorated in the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
