Births Jun 1891 Wheatley Thomas Harold Shardlow
7b 494. He may have lied about his age.
He stated he was 26 years old plus 2 months when he attested in 1916, so the birthh record is about right. He was not 31 at the time of his death in 1918.
According to the AIF Project, he was aged 8 on arrival in Australia-it is thought that his parents were deceased and that all his siblings remained in England.
Census, 1901- his sister, Annie Wheatley who was shown as his Next of Kin and the beneficiary of his will is not listed. The sisters are described as daughters but the head of the household, either their mother or father are not listed.
Annie's address was stated as 2 Midland Terrace, Long Heaton [sic] Derbyshire, England
Edith Sarah Wheatley Daughter 18 Long Eaton, Derbyshire
Lilly Wheatley Daughter16 Draycott, Derbyshire
Betsy Wheatley Daughter 14 Draycott, Derbyshire
Gertie Wheatley Daughter 12 Draycott, Derbyshire
Thomas Harold Wheatley Son 10 Long Eaton, Derbyshire [This shows that his age of 8 years old on arrival in Australia is unlikely]
His address in Australia is shown as 9 Pier Street, Perth, Western Australia.

For more than a century the headstone on his wargrave bore the Jewish Star of David emblem, but his case was reviewed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in 2020/2021 and it has been determined that the religious emblem be amended from a Star of David to a Cross, based on the following rationale:
No individual family members or addresses are named on the register entry or headstone schedule and no personal inscription was chosen by the family, all indicating no contact was made with the Next of Kin.
Private Wheatley attested under the religious denomination of ‘Church of England’.
The baptism record for this casualty shows that on 4 March 1912 he was baptised.
No evidence has been found to show this casualty or his parents were of the Jewish faith nor any evidence of the casualty marrying prior to his death.
A new headstone was erected in February 2021.
