15 May 1915: Wounded AIF WW1, Lieutenant, 8th Infantry Battalion, ANZAC / Gallipoli, Injured elbow at W beach Gallipoli. He returned to 8th Bn Gallipoli but then was sick again and invalided to England, subsequently returned to Australia on 5/2/1916. He was to be promoted to Captain 10/10/1915 but this fell through due to his invalid status.

4 May 1917: Wounded AIF WW1, Captain, 8th Infantry Battalion, Bullecourt (First), Gun shot wound to head/cellubelum "severe", evacuated to England, returned to Australia for administrative duties. On 1/10/1918 returned to England from Australia.
8 Nov 1917: Honoured Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, Bullecourt (First), On the 22 April 1917, for attack on Queant - Battle of . 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He commanded a successful attack on an enemy strong point, and personally conducted the consolidation of the captured post. Later, under intense shell fire, he displayed the utmost gallantry and coolness in encouraging his men, and showing a fine disregard for personal safety.' Attestation papers say he was wounded in this action.
13 May 1918: Honoured Mention in Dispatches, Attestation states "for gallant service and devotion to duty on the field during the period 26/2/1917 to 20/9/1917
