Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Thomas Edward Hughes was one of three sons of Frederick Malcolm and Esther Hughes, of Bayswater, Western Australia who served overseas in the AIF. Thomas was only 18 years of age, his older brother Frederick, age 22, died in France of illness, two days before the armistice in 1918. A younger brother, Joseph Hughes, enlisted at the age of 16 years and four months before being returned to Australia after being caught out under age. The father, Frederick Malcolm Hughes, also enlisted in the AIF, at 47 years of age, and spent 11 days on active serve with the 51st Battalion in France. He fell sick and was evacuated to England, then was returned to Australia, ‘overage and rheumatism’.

The family had come to Western Australia from Lancashire, England during 1912.

Thomas was killed during the attack on Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916. He was reported as missing for about 8 months before his death was confirmed. There is a note in his service file that Pioneers from another Battalion later found his paybook on a body.
