Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Driver Nicholas Garaty, (MEDAILLE DE HONNEUR AVEC GLAIVES-EN BRONZE), 30th Battalion (Transport Section), coachbuilder from Hannell Street, Plattsburg, New South Wales, was laid to rest on the 2nd May 1961 at Sandgate Cemetery, age 74.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 11th June 1886 to John Francis and Bridget Garity; husband of Amy G Garaty nee Summers (married 1925, died 1967), Nicholas enlisted July 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W., and returned home May 1919.

Mr Garaty’s name has been inscribed on the Wallsend Soldiers' Memorial and Wallsend Municipal & District Roll of Honor.

Mr Garaty had been resting in an unmarked grave for 55 years, so I have placed a cross on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
