102 years ago today, on the 18th September 1918, Private John Thomas Hope, 46th Battalion (Reg No-2917), linesman from 68 Railway Street, Merewether, New South Wales, fell at the Hindenburg Line, near Bellenglise, France, age 27. (on the 18-19th September 1918, men from the 46th Battalion penetrated the wire defences of the Hindenburg Line near Bellenglise).

Born at Adamstown, New South Wales on the 28th November 1890 to William Edward (died 1923 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139938299) and Alice (died 1917 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article138739107, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article138736228) Hope of Alice Street, Merewether, New South Wales; husband of Elsie M (Myrtle?) Hope nee Jones (married 1913, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1949?), John enlisted September 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 19.5.1917 (hernia), 13.12.1917 (influenza), and wounded in action - 12.10.1917 (GSW back, 1st Battle of Passchendaele), Mr Hope is resting at Jeancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Plot VI Row A Grave 2.

John’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates. A member of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows.
There is no memorial inscription on his parent’s headstone plaque to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a memorial cross, so I have placed poppies to honour his duty and supreme sacrifice for God, King and Country.
