Died on this date – 9th November…… Henry William Elvery was born at Barolin Road, Bundaberg, Queensland on 12th September, 1891.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 20th October, 1915 as a year old, single, Farmer (Attestation Papers state Fireman) from Maryborough Road, Bundaberg, Queensland.

Gunner Henry William Elvery, Service number 20942, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Argyllshire (A8) on 11th May, 1916 with the 9th Field Artillery Brigade, 34th Battery & disembarked at Devonport, England on 10th July, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

He was appointed Driver with effect from 1st September, 1916 while attached to 9th Field Artillery Brigade at Larkhill, Wiltshire.

On 31st October, 1916 Driver Elvery was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire with Bronchial Catarrh & then reported with Pneumonia ‘severe’ on 1st November, 1916.

Driver Henry William Elvery died on 9th November, 1916 at Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire, England from Pneumonia.

He was buried in in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located. Driver Elvery has a Private Headstone which was erected by his Comrades of 9th Field Artillery Brigade. His death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
