Donald Wallace McLEAN was born at Uranquinty, NSW, on 26th March 1895. He went to school in Albury, NSW. He joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a junior porter (casual) in the Junee District of the Traffic Branch on 15th April 1911. His position was made permanent on 29th September 1911 and was upgraded to the status of porter on his 21st birthday, 26th March 1916. However, before then, on 19th August 1915, he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces.

He joined the AIF on 27th August 1915 with the rank of Private (Service Number 4038). He was posted to the 12th Reinforcements to the 4th Infantry Battalion. He nominated his father, Richard McLean of Albury, NSW, as his next of kin.

He embarked for Egypt aboard HMAT A7 ‘Medic’ at Sydney on 30th December 1915 and disembarked at Alexandria, Egypt, on 17th January 1916. He joined the 4th Infantry Battalion at Serapeum, Egypt, on 17th March 1916 and embarked for France and the Western Front on 23rd March 1916.

On 12th May 1916 he reported sick with a septic hand and this kept him off duty until 24th May 1916. Between 22nd and 25th July 1916 he was wounded in action at Pozières. He died of his wounds on 26th July 1916.

Donald’s grave is in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, Warloy-Baillon, Picardie, France. His place of association is Albury, NSW. He was 21 years ol when he died.
