"2667 Private Albert Gerkens, 6th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion, of Richmond, Vic. Pte Gerkens enlisted on 14 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Moldavia on 5 October 1915. He was killed in action on 29 September 1917 on the Menin Road, Ypres, whilst serving with the 2nd Pioneer Battalion." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
"Private Bert Gerkens had given two years of valiant service before the end came to a bright young life on September 29. He was killed in action. Private Gerkens was the son of a worthy and esteemed resident, Mr. Gerkens, formerly of York-street, and was born in Richmond 21 years ago. He attended the Christian Brothers School at Abbotsford, and prior to enlistment was a trusted employe at the Marshall Shoe Factory.
