Biography contributed by Michael Silver

The Mudgee Guardian reported that Mr. John Vallack Single, of 'Tilbelah', Twelve Mile, died very suddenly on Friday morning, 12 December 1947, aged 57 years. He was a member of the old Wollar family, and had resided in the district for practically a lifetime.

A bank accountant by profession he was a man of fine character, and his untimely death will be deeply regretted right throughout the district.

He married Carrie Danvers Sheaffe at Bowral on 30 December 1916 shortly after enlisting in the A.I.F. Embarking for overseas in mid 1917, he served two years in Framce and Belgium as a Gunner with the Field Artillery, returning in August 1919.

John Single resumed his banking career after the war, working in Sydney before being appointed as the accountant at the Bathurst branch of the Commercial Bank. In November 1926 his wife, who had been suffering depression, was tradgically killed near Bowral when struck by a train.

Shortly after, with young children to raise, he took up the property 'Tilbelah' near Mudgee, operating a successful sheep grazing operation that produced fine quality wool. In December 1935, he married Eileen Maxwell at Gulgong.

He was survived by a widow, two sons, and one daughter, and they had the sympathy of the whole community. The funeral took place to the Church of England portion of the Mudgee cemetery on 14 December 1947, the Rev. Canon Powell officiating.
