Angelo Roy BOITANO, known as Roy, was born on the 11 Jan 1898. Angelo was the eldest son of Giovanni BOITANO and Eliza Susanna SABINE.  Roy was born in the suburb of Kew, which is now known as Semaphore South, in the district of Port Adelaide, South Australia.

In July 1915, Roy obtained his Mother's permission to enlist as he was only 17 and a half years old, although he stated that he was a year older on his enlistment papers  Roy was a slighly built lad and of short stature.

Two elder brothers also enlisted.

Herbert Walter CARR had joined the 9th Light Horse Regiment  in October of 1914.

Arthur John BOITANO enlisted shortly after Roy and served with the 9th Light Horse Regiment.
