Died on this date – 1st March…… Reginald Frederick Sanderson was born on 17th December, 1882 at Bombay, India.

He joined Western Australian Government Railways (W.A.G.R.) on 25th October, 1900, aged 18 years, as a Cleaner at Mid Junction.

Reginald Frederick Sanderson married May Alice Burrows on 30th June, 1909 at Boulder, Western Australia.

On 15th September, 1915 Reginald Frederick Sanderson enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 33 year old, married, Engine Driver (Government Railways) from 82 Dyer Street, Boulder City, Western Australia.

Gunner Reginald Frederick Sanderson, Service number 5369, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Hororata (A20) on 27th September, 1915 with the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade - 10th Reinforcements.

He joined M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) on 19th November, 1915 & was taken on strength of 8th Battery from 11th Reinforcements (as stated on Casualty Form – Active Service) at Heliopolis on 19th November, 1915.

On 27th February, 1916 Gunner Sanderson was transferred to 4th Artillery Division. He was taken on strength of 21st Howitzer Brigade on 3rd March, 1916 at Tel-el-Kebir & posted to Headquarters.

Gunner Sanderson proceeded to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria on 25th March, 1916. He disembarked at Marseilles, France on 1st April, 1916. Gunner Sanderson was attached to 21st Field Artillery Brigade Headquarters in France on 15th May, 1916. He was transferred to 3rd Field Ambulance & attached to 21st Field Artillery Brigade Headquarters in the Field on 19th September, 1916.

He reported sick on 31st December, 1916. He was admitted to 8th Field Ambulance then transferred to D.R.S. (Divisional Rest Station) on 31st December, 1916. Gunner Sanderson was admitted to New Zealand Stationary Hospital at Amiens on 3rd January, 1917 then transferred to Ambulance Train. He embarked from Rouen, France on 8th January, 1917 with P.U.O. (Pyrexia (fever) of unknown origin) for England on Hospital Ship St David.

On 8th January, 1917 Gunner Sanderson was admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital at Brighton, England with Laryngitis (slight). The Hospital Admissions form recorded “Rather a severe case. Voice now clear again.” He was discharged to Furlo from 1st March, 1917 until 16th March, 1917 & was then to report to Perham Downs.

Gunner Sanderson was marched in to No. 1 Command Depot at Perham Downs, Wiltshire, England on 17th March, 1917 & was medically classified as B1 A (fit for light duty). He was marched out from No. 1 Command Depot on 12th April, 1917 & was marched in to No. 3 Command Depot at Hurdcott, Wiltshire on 13th April, 1917. He was medically classified on 23rd April, 1917 as B1 A4 (fit for Overseas Training Camp when passed dentally fit.)

He was marched in to H & D (Hardening & Drafting) Depot a Perham Downs, Wiltshire on 5th May, 1917 from Hurdcott. Gunner Sanderson was marched out to R.B.A.A. (Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery) at Larkhill, Wiltshire on 14th May, 1917.

On 24th June, 1917 Gunner Sanderson was transferred to A.A.M.C. (Australian Army Medical Corps) Details at Parkhouse, Wiltshire. He was taken on strength of A.A.M.C. at Larkhill on 24th June, 1917 from 8th F.A.B.

Private Sanderson was taken on strength of 59th Company Reinforcements on 12th September, 1917. He proceeded overseas to France via Folkestone on 15th September, 1917 from A.R.O.D. (Australian Railway Operating Division) Depot at Bordon. Private Sanderson was taken on strength of 59th R.O.C. (Railway Operating Group) on 7th October, 1917 as Sapper.

He was transferred from 59th Coy to 15th A.L.R.O. (Australian Light Railway Operating) Company on 20th November, 1917. He was taken on strength of 15 A.L.R.O. Company on 21st November, 1917. Sapper Sanderson was detached to 5th N.Z. L.R.O.C. (Light Railway Operating Company) on 21st November, 1917. He rejoined his Unit on 14th February, 1918.

On 19th February, 1918 Sapper Sanderson reported sick. He was admitted to 48th Field Ambulance on 19th February, 1918 then transferred to 37th D.R.S. (Divisional Rest Station) on the same day with Bronchitis. Sapper Sanderson was discharged to duty on 27th February, 1918 & rejoined No. 1 R.O. C. on the same day. He was detached to 4th Army on 27th February, 1918 & rejoined his Unit from detachment on 3rd April, 1918.

Sapper Reginald Frederick Sanderson was transferred to 3rd Field Ambulance on 13th July, 1918. He was marched in to A.G.B.D. (Australian General Base Depot) on 15th July, 1918 & marched out to his Unit on 20th July, 1918. Private Sanderson was taken on strength of 3rd Field Ambulance on 23rd July, 1918 from 1st Australia L. R. Operating Company.

He was on Leave to UK from 12th September, 1918 & rejoined his Unit from Leave on 1st October, 1918.

On 12th February, 1919 Private Sanderson was marched out from France ready for R.T.A. (Return to Australia). He was admitted to 40th Stationary Hospital at Harfleur on 20th February, 1919 – seriously ill with Broncho Pneumonia. Private Sanderson was invalided to England on 27th February, 1919 on Hospital Ship Aberdonian with Influenza & Broncho Pneumonia.

He was admitted to University War Hospital, Southampton, Hampshire, England on 28th February, 1919 with Pneumonia – seriously ill.

Private Reginald Frederick Sanderson died at 9 pm on 1st March, 1919 at University War Hospital, Southampton, Hampshire, England from Pneumonia.

He was buried in Hollybrook Cemetery, Southampton, Hampshire, England where 12 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
