We note with regret that Private S. H. McNair, of Springfield, is mentioned among the names of 400 Australian soldiers previously  reported missing at Gallipoli, and whose deaths have now been  officially established. The deceased soldier is a brother of Mrs A. Carberry, of Jerilderie, to whom the sympathy of our community is extended

Samuel Hay McNair, Junior, was born in Temora on the 1st of January 1893, the eldest of three sons to Samuel Hay McNair and Martha McNair of Springdale.

He attended Springdale Public School with his siblings until the family fragmented when he moved to the Wollongong area with his father. His two younger brothers remained with their mother in Springdale until they also enlisted in the AIF early in 1915.

Samuel NcNair was an early enlistment in the AIF. He was sworn in on the 14th September 1914, barely one month after the declaration of war and the Government commencing recruiting.

At that time, he was a baker, single, aged 21 and a half years. What motivated him to enlist remains a mystery.

He was allocated to the 13th Battalion, AIF and embarked from Melbourne on the 22nd December 1914 for what was thought to be service in Europe as part of the 4th Division AIF.

Instead, they were redirected to Egypt, arriving in eraly February 1915 with the first New Zealand contingent and became the first ANZAC component of the expeditionary force to the Dardanelles. He was truly an original ANZAC.

The 13th Battalion landed in the afternoon of the 25th April 1915 and under desultory artillery and small arms fire, made their way to the head of what became known as Monash Valley. The following day saw the 13th Battalion reinforcing the remnants of the original defenders of Quinn's Post at the very head of Monash Valley,

Quinn's Post became the vital ground over the next week to holding the entire ANZAC position at Gallipoli.

The Turks also recognised this and resulted in the most ferocious Turkish attacks and ANZAC defence of the entire campaign.

Private Samuel McNair was last seen taking part in a desperate counter attack at Quinn's Post on the 27th April 1915.

He was subsequently reported as "Wounded - Missing In Action" on the 3rd May 1915.

After the evacuation from Gallipoli, a Court of Enquiry convened in Egypt in April 1916 determined him to be "Killed in Action 3rd May 1915 - No Known Grave".

An entire year passed without notification of his fate causing untold grief to his parents, particularly his mother, as evidenced by her letters to the Army seeking information.

He is commemorated today in perpetuity on Panel 38 on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli and the War Memorials in Temora and Springdale.
