Walter Osmond Beale was born on 11th August 1877 in Mount Gambier, South Australia, to his parents Charles L. Beale and Matilda Beale. He was employed as a plumber. Before World War 1, Beale fought in the Boer War as part of the Mount Gambier Infantry for 1 year and 110 days. His attestation papers state his age to be 23 years as of 30th January, 1901. He received the Queen's South Africa medal for his efforts and returned to work as a Plumber in Mt Gambier after fighting.
Beale's AIF Attestation Papers state his age to be 45 at the time of enlistment 16th September, 1915. He was described as; height i5 feet 11 ¼ inches, weight 141lbs, with blue eyes, dark hair, and a fair complexion. His religious denomination was the Church of England
Walter Osmond Beale embarked from Melbourne on the HMAT Orsova A67 on 12th November 1915. He disembarked in the Middle East and was taken on strength with the 24th Field Artillery Brigade on 1st April, 1916. He proceeded to France disembarking at Marseilles 13th June 1916.
Beale was sent to the hospital sick on 11th January 1917, admitted as a case of P.U.O. (Pyrexia of Unknown Origin) later diagnosed at Bronchitis. After initial treatment in France he was sent to hospital in England. Once he recovered Beale proceeded back to France 23rd July 1917. He was taken on strength with the 3rd Australian Light Horse Mounted Battalion on 5th August, 1917.
He transferred back to the 38th Battery of the 10th Field Artillery on the 24th of that month. He was wounded in action on 5th October 1917 with general sharpnel wounds to his back and scalp and was admitted to hospital in France. He recovered and marched in to his unit 13th November 1917.
Beale returned to Austgralia on the ship Armagh departing Devonport 5th April 1919. Beale was discharged on 8th July, 1919
Walter Osmond Beale was married to Elsie May Beale after the war and they had three children. He later passed away on 6th May, 1953 and he was buried in Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia. Before his death, he lived at 7 Winchester Street, Highgate (known as Rosefield at the time of his passing).
