William James Mason was mortally wounded in the right thigh on the 26 July 1916, and died of wounds in the 1st Australian Field Ambulance the same day. His younger brother, 4656 Pte. John James Mason 45th Battalion AIF, went missing at Pozieres 10 days later, 5 August 1916, age 20.
