On the 3rd March 1979, Driver Wesley Henry Albert O'Neil, 13th Battalion (Reg No-1813), miner from Mine Camp, Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales, died at Newcastle, N.S.W., possibly buried on the 5th March 1979, age 87.
Never married.
Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 13th February 1892 as Westley H A to John C, died 5.9.1920, Toronto, N.S.W. as O'NEILL, age 80, buried at Sandgate Cemetery, N.S.W., METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) D SW. 51, and Rosina O'Neil nee Parsons, died 9.6.1936, Catherine Hill Bay, N.S.W., age 86, mother of 5, sleeping at Sandgate Cemetery, N.S.W., METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) D SW. 51.
Wes enlisted on the 21st August 1915 with the 30th Battalion, age 23 years 6 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A35 Berrima on the 17th December 1915.
Transferred to 13th Battalion 4.3.1916.
To be pack horse driver 24.3.1916.
Granted leave to England from 23.8.1918 to 11.9.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 5.4.1919.
Wes arrived home on the 20th May 1919, being discharged on the 12th July 1919.
Not officially commemorated.
Mr. O'Neil’s name has been inscribed on the Catherine Hill Bay Cornstalk Lodge G.U.O.F.G. Roll of Honour, Catherine Hill Bay Honour Roll of Soldiers, Catherine Hill Bay Roll of Honour and the Catherine Hill Bay War Memorial.

There is no headstone for Wes to tell us of his service with the 1st A.I.F., but a wooden cross had been erected, probably now destroyed, so I will visit to ascertain if a new cross is warranted.
Older brother Andrew O'Neil, born 14.7.1884?, or 1885?, Newcastle, N.S.W., married machine man from Mine Camp, Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales, enlisted 22.1.1916, Newcastle, N.S.W., 34th Battalion, Reg No-860, Private, unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916, disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916, proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916, wounded in action - 17.5.1917 (multiple GSW shoulder & chest, severe), transferred to 1st Australian Machine Gun Battalion 25.10.1917, KIA 26.5.1918, age 33 or 34 or 35, resting at Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France.
