From How We Served
5341 & V10226 Staff Sergeant John North of Hay, New South Wales, and Perth, Western Australia, had been studying as a dental student when he enlisted for War Service on the 21st of June 1915. Taken on strength with the Australian Army Medical Corps Details 1st AIF, John was embarked for overseas and further training, departing Australia on the 22nd of July 1915.
After time spent in England with the medical services, John was sent over to France on the 21st of September 1916, and was taken on strength with the Australian Advanced Base Depot at Etaples, before being detached for service with the 12th Field Ambulance on the 4th of November for service in the trenches.
By the end of January 1917, John had been returned to England, and was taken on strength with the 2nd Australian Convalescent Depot, with which he would be appointed Staff Sergeant of the Dental section.
John would remain in England, until he was returned to France and attached to the 89th Dental Unit on the 22nd of September 1918. Whilst in France, John was temporarily attached as a medical orderly for the 3rd Squadron Australian Flying Corps in January 1919, before being returned again to England in February.
John would remain on duty until receiving his formal discharge from the 1st AIF whilst still in England following his demobilization as of the 17th of January 1920.
With the outbreak of a second World War, John again presented himself for enlistment with the Australian Military Forces on the 14th of January 1941.
Accepted for Home Service, John would go on to serve with the Australian Army Medical Corps Dental Services within the 3rd Military District (Victoria) for the duration of the War. John was still in service, and on strength with the 70th Dental Unit, when he was evacuated to the 115th Australian General Hospital (Heidelberg) where he succumbed to illness on the 28th of December 1945, at the age of 60.
Following his passing Staff Sergeant John North, a veteran of two World Wars, was formally laid to rest within Spingvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
