John Henry Foster  was the son of William, a shoe maker and Elizabeth Foster [née Bellamy] of Rose Cottage, Kneesall, Newark. His father William was born in 1854 at Kneesall and his mother Elizabeth Bellamy was born in 1859 at Eakring. They were married in 1879, their marriage being recorded in the Southwell Registration district.

They went on to have the following children:

Sarah b 1881, John Henry b 1882, Alice M b 1887 and Alfred William b 1900, all were born in Kneesall. In the 1911 census his parents are living at Kneesall and are shown as William, 57 years a shoe maker, living with his wife Elizabeth 52 years and their son Alfred William 11 years. In the same 1911 census  John Henry has moved out of the family home and is living at 31 Newcastle Street, Tuxford, and is shown as being 28 years, a boarder and a stationary engine driver for a railway company, he is living with Sarah Ann Millers [sic] a 66 year old widow and her son. On 6th March 1913  John Henry, 30 years is shown as a passenger on board the White Star Line ship Runic which left the Port of Liverpool travelling to Sydney Australia, he gave his occupation as that of a carpenter.

Private John Henry Foster originally enlisted in 1901 at Sheffield in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, signing on for 8 years with the colours and 4 years in the reserves. After his service he emigrated to Australia. He enlisted at Liverpool, New South Wales, on 27th October 1914 giving his home town as Sydney. He was a labourer and was 32 years of age and single. Posted to the 13th Battalion Australian Infantry he embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22nd December 1914 for Egypt. He embarked from Alexandria on 12th April 1915 bound for Gallipoli. He was promoted to acting corporal on 3rd May 1915 and promoted to Corporal on 11th June 1915.

He is remembered on the Kneesall - St Bartholomews - Cross War Memorial.
