PRIVATE HENRY JAMES MAZE - 3317
Henry James Maze was born on 16 July 1898 in Kogarah, Sydney to parents Henry Hamilton Maze, a merchant, and Louisa J Maze. Maze attended Sydney Technical High School from 1912 to 1915, before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force at the young age of 17 on 1st September 1915. Prior to the war he worked for a brief period of time as a government clerk. Maze was described as a 5 foot 10 inch tall, 136 lb Presbyterian man with a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair.
Maze went embarked to overseas service on the 23rd of December, 1915, and arrived in Marseilles, France in the 27th of March, 1916. His first time with an official arrival in a medical facility was with the 17th Casualty Clearing Station in September 1916 he got cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, before being discharged to England in late September 1916. Thus, the beginning of Maze’s combat was during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 which was one of the most bloody fights in the entire war. Maze together with the 19th Battalion then engaged in an operation to take this critically significant village of Pozières.
The next year in May Maze’s battalion joined the battle of Fromelles, another disastrous attack plan that caused more than 5,500 Australians to be killed in a day. Maze, however fortunately managed to withstand the attacks. He was involved in the second battle of Bullecourt in April 1917 which was a series of two attacks of the Australians into the German held village. Maze’s unit, the 19th Battalion was involved in the second wave and the Maze was most probably involved in the close assault in the ruined village of Bullecourt. In June of the same year, Maze fought in the Battle of Messines which was an Allied attack and the Messines Ridge was taken. He also earned himself a Victory medal and a British War medal.
Maze returned to Australia on the first of June 1919 and was discharged from the AIF deemed medically unfit on the eleventh of August 1919, with medical discharge attributable to the cellulitis that affected him during the war. Maze married Elsie Sylvia Coles in the year 1938. Death records indicate that he survived both his parents with his father Henry Hamilton Maze passing on in the year 1938 and his mother, Louisa J Maze passing on in the year 1952. Henry James Maze himself died at the age of 59 on 21 September 1957. His wife Elsie Sylvia Coles survived him and was only to die in 1996 aged 88.
