Add my storyBiography contributed by Charlie Froling
Charles Eric Cox was born on the 3rd of April, 1894, in Medindie, Adelaide. Charlie's mother was Sarah Anne Cox and his father was William Cox. They lived in Darling Street, Medindie, Adelaide. Charlie's father died when he was eleven. Before the First World War, Charles went to work as an apprentice for Mr Doug (Dudly) Worthly, who had a tailor shop, on the corner of Gawler Place and Pirie St, Adelaide.
He was twenty one when he finished his apprenticeship, then he went to the First World War with his brother, Victor. He enlisted in Adelaide on the 1st of March, 1916, aged twenty two. He was a Regimental Tailor, for the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment. He served with Bert Arthur, Harold Symes and Syd Hook, all boys from Orroroo, men became great mates during the war.
After the war, he and his brother Frank, opened a Tailor and Mercer shop at Laura, where they worked together.
While at Laura, Mr Cox rode a motorbike to Port Augusta, and took orders for suits and trousers.
In 1923, he borrowed £300 from his brother, to open a Tailor shop in Orroroo. A Miss Lennert and a Miss Myrtle Fry, worked for him in Orroroo. He employed a lot of local people and taught them tailoring skills. He was well liked and was thought of as a good boss.
In 1923, he married Ruby Arthur, who was Bert Arthur's sister and bought an attractive blue stone house in Orroroo on Third Street. They had one son in 1928, Howard Arthur Cox, who lived at Wentworth Falls as an adult. Howard married late in life and they had no children. Howard died in 2015.
In 1953, Charles closed his shop, and moved to Adelaide to live, where he then went to work for John Martins.
Charles Eric Cox died on the 21st January 1959, he was sixty four. He is buried at North Road Cemetery, parents Sarah and William are both buried there as well.
