Elder of two brothers (William and Philip) who served in WWI, Private William Thomas Smith (Service No:2227) enlisted in the AiF in Sydney on 1 May 1915, and was attached to 4th Infantry Battalion on 16 June 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Gallipoli on board HMAT A63 Karoola. WiA at Gallipoli on 1 August 1915, Private Smith then served with 53rd Infantry Battalion on the Western Front, where he was WiA on two occasions (1916 - GSW leg and 1918 - Gassed). Private Smith embarked from England for Sydney on 9 March 1919 on board HT Kashmir, and was attached to 53rd Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 1 July 1919. In WWII, Private Smith served in the ACMF (Service No:V15910) with 3 and 13 Garrison Battalions from 11 June 1941 to 28 March 1943.

Bill was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1887, second of six children of William Thomas Smith Snr (b1860 in Indigo, Victoria) and Emma Vibert (b1863 in Beechworth, Victoria). William and Emma married in 1884 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and William was a Labourer until his death in 1916 - Emily died in 1897.

Bill worked as a Boilermaker in Melbourne, and in 1910 married Victoria Martha Prosser (b1888 in Melbourne). Bill and Victoria settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Bill worked as a Boilermaker before enlisting in the AIF in 1915. Following his Discharge from the Army in 1919, Bill and Victoria settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Bill worked as a Labourer, Rabit Catcher (Government employment) and Wharf Labourer. In 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF, Bill was an Unemployed Wharf Labourer. Bill died in 1944, and Victoria died in 1963.
