Matthew marriage and children.
When Matthew Doherty was born on 24 August 1883 in Adelaide, South Australia, his father, Maurice Joseph Doherty , was 37 and his mother, Margaret Jane `nee Bushby, was 34. He married Mary Ellen Burke on 5 March 1908, St Mary's Church, Lower North Adelaide, South Australia. They had five children during their marriage, Ellen 1908, Ida 1909, Leonard 1910, Winnifred 1913, and Kathleen 1916. He died as a young father 4 days after his 33rd birthday on 28 August 1916 in France at the age of 33, and was buried in Picardie, Warloy Ballion Communal Cemetery Somme, France. Sadly he wasn't to meet the last daughter Kathleen as she was born three months after his departure to Egypt 1916. Ironically his only son Leonard was to enlist in WWII and lose his life aged 34 in Papua New Guinea a few weeks short of peace being declared. His family were to move to Kapunda to live after the death of Matthew in France.
