Jonathon was the son of Jonathon and Mary Emily Jane Freer [nee Woolford].
He and his younger brother Arthur both fought in World War One. He left
Adelaide on A19 Afric on 9 June 1916. After completing further training in
England, Jonathon was sent to France from Southampton on 25 November. He
was wounded in action on 31 July 1917, sustaining severe wounds to a hand,
necessitating his being transferred to Dutton War Hospital , Northampton on
9 August for treatment. His mother was notified of his wounds on 30 August,
with a further updating on 10 September. Upon convalescing, Jonathon was
transferred to Tidworth Base on 1 March 1918, prior to being attached to
Weymouth Camp on 1 October 1918. He returned to Australia on the
Argyllshire on 1 August 1919 and was discharged on 2 November.
