George William Hannam, born in Narrandera in 1898 (1) to George Hannam and Edith Beatrice (6). He had two sisters, Doris and Ruth (5). George's enlistment papers indicate he was not married and that he followed the Church of England. He attended Sydney Technical High School from 1911 to 1916 (7).
George enlisted in WW1 on 5 November 1917 at the age of 18, having recently graduated from high school, leaving behind his parents, hometown, and job as a bank clerk in Rockdale (5).
George as a Gunner for the 1st Field Artillery Brigade 30th Reinforcements (8). He trained at the Sydney Show Ground Camp for several months before embarking from Sydney 5th November 1917. He served on the Western Front during 1918.
George survived the war and returned to Australia on 20 June 1919 (12). Post-war, he likely led a happy life without further conflicts, although details of his death are unknown. In his medical report, he noted his good health, stating, "I am not suffering from any disabilities due to or aggravated by war service, and feel fit and well." (13)
