Fred Downie enlisted on the 12th June, 1915. Only 4 days later he was embarked from Sydney. He was a labourer, but did have previous military experience in the St.George's Rifles. Fred's two brothers, Thomas Downie and John Keith Downie served in WW1. Fred's cousin, 2202 John James Patterson, served in 54 Battalion. Fred arrived at his unit, the 4th Battalion on Gallipoli, on the 4th August, 1915, and went missing during the battle at Lone Pine. Military inquiry concluded that Fred Downie was killed in action at Lone Pine, 6th-9th August, 1915.
