Son of john Franklin and Elizabeth Coates who died in 1907 and 1910.
Next of kin was given as his sister Sarah Harriet Louisa Coates of Marong, Victoria. Brother of William Thomas Coates of 220 Bridge Street, Bendigo, Victoria. William returned to Australia on 25 October 1918 having served in the 13th Battalion
