Biography contributed by John Oakes
Herman Hill JONES (Service Number 1096) was born on 10th April 1891 at Carrog, Merionethshire, Wales. He first worked for the Tramways in Sydney as a casual conductor in Sydney from 13th September 1912. He became permanent in April 1913 and it was from this duty that he was released to join the Expeditionary Forces on 14th November 1914.
Jones had already enlisted at Liverpool two weeks earlier. Being unmarried he gave his mother as his next of kin. He was allotted to the 13th Australian Infantry Battalion and left Australia from Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Medic’ on 30th December 1914.
He was wounded at Gallipoli with gunshot injuries to his shoulder, penetrating his chest, on 29th May 1915.
He lived long enough to reach the Hospital Ship ‘Gascon’ which was lying off Gaba Tepe. Here he quickly succumbed to his injuries and died at 12 o’clock on 30th May. He was buried at sea, just off the Turkish coast. The Rev Lee Warner officiated.
As he has no grave, he in commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.
