An Original Anzac who served twice during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

89 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 16th July 1935, Lieutenant Arthur James Gardiner, 55th Battalion (Reg No-698), clerk and Mayor (Waratah Council, 1920-1935), from 30 Dent Street, Islington, New South Wales and 94 Maitland Road, Mayfield, N.S.W. and 119 Maitland Road, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of two, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 50. ANGLICAN 2-122. 55.

Born at North Sydney or St Leonards, New South Wales on the 7th September 1884 to Frederick Farr, died 4.8.1917, "Bronlee", Sutherland Street, Waratah, N.S.W., age 60, buried at ANGLICAN 1-34A. 49,
and Mary Elizabeth Gardiner nee Livermore, died 4.12.1926, age 65, mother of 5, from Sunderland & Rawson Streets, Mayfield, New South Wales, sleeping at ANGLICAN 2-122. 53; husband of Margaret Chisholm Gardiner nee Hann, married 1923, Redfern, N.S.W., died 1.8.1931, Wallsend Hospital, N.S.W., age 40, mother of 2 (Ronald James & Margaret), sleeping here, Arthur enlisted on the 22nd September 1914 with the 13th Battalion at Rosehill, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board TRANSPORT A38 Ulysses on the 22nd December 1914.

Wounded in action - 4.5.1915 (BW, compound fracture of thigh whilst shifting stores to the front, Gaba Tepe, Gallipoli).

Commenced return to Australia 29.7.1915 (invalided).
Arthur arrived home on the 25th August 1915.

Reenlisted 27.1.1916, (34th Battalion) Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 29.4.1917 (appendicitis, slight), 24.3.1918 (influenza).

Granted leave to England from 15.12.1918 to 4.1.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 23.6.1919.

Arthur arrived home on the 9th August 1919, being discharged on the 8th October 1919.

Mr. Gardiner’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and the Islington St. Mark's Church Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Arthur’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
