Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Patrick Broderick was an Irishman, and it is not known when he came to Western Australia. He enlisted at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia late in 1915, and gave his occupation as a miner.

He only left Australia in April 1916 and was killed in action during the heavy fighting at Mouquet Farm in September 1916 which cost the 51st Battalion dearly in casualties, a large number of whom were listed as missing in action.

Patrick’s remains were discovered by the Imperial War Graves Commission during 1923, and his identity disc was recovered. His next of kin was his mother in Ireland but she had passed away in 1918. His medals etc. were eventually sent to a brother in Perth, David Broderick.

Another brother, Thomas Broderick, had been killed during a Trans-Australia railway accident during 1915, near Kalgoorlie, in which four rail workers tragically died.
