72 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 10th December 1948, Gunner James Thomas Smith, (also known as Sugar), 14th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-535A), fettler from 94 Lower Church Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and Wickham, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 66. ANGLICAN 3-180. 58.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 22nd September 1882 to Thomas and Mary Smith; husband of Isabella Smith nee Pearce (married 1906, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1971, age 84), Sugar enlisted July 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Wounded in action 30.10.1916 (accidental GSW head, severe), 3.11.1917 (gas poisoning), James was invalided home May 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 24th July 1918.
Mr Smith’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour and the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1).
Service record states Died War Service 9/12/48.
Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance, Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
I will place poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label to honour Sugar’s service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.
