Biography contributed by Dave Roberts

Edgar William Chenoweth enlisted in the AIF on 10th July 1915, claiming to be 18 years and 1 month old. He was born in 1898, so at best he was only 17 years of age but he did provide written permission from his mother. His father had already passed away.

Three months after he enlisted, he embarked on H.M.A.T. "Moldovia" and disembarked in France approximately five months later. Less than three months later he was killed in action on 27th June 1916, aged 18.

2602 Pte Edgar William Chenoweth, 21st Battalion later 7th Battalion, was killed in action near Ploegsteert, Belgium, on 27 June 1916 and his death is recorded by name in the War Diary of the 7th Battalion; this is unusual for a lower rank.

He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

His mother received a memorial plaque, memorial scroll and King's message. She also received a package of her late son's effects including 2 discs, letters, photos, belt, tobacco pouch, mirror, comb, nail scissors, 2 pencils in nickel cases, wallet containg tickets, stamps and one half-penny. 2 pocket books, 2 prayer books, 7 coins, key stud and coil wire.
