Private CLAUD WILLIAM MASON, late of D Company, 48th Battalion, who was killed in action in France on August 8, was the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Mason, of 'Avon Holme,' O'Halloran Hill.  He was born at O'Halloran Hill on November 24, 1894, and was educated at the local and Reynella public schools. Later on he started a surveyor's course with the International Correspondence Course, Sydney. He had just completed and passed the first branch of it satisfactorily when the call came to him to help his King and country. He enlisted on August 6, 1915, and sailed for Egypt on January 11  1916. While there he was admitted to hospital in Cairo suffering with heart trouble in May of the same year. He arrived in England in July, 1916, and after three weeks at Salisbury Plain was sent to  France. Whilst there he was attacked with trench feet, and sent for light work to the base, where he remained for nearly twelve months. From there he had furlough in November, 1917, which he spent at Birmingham with his mother's relatives. On returning he was attached to the Engineers, but eventualy rejoined his battalion, and shortly afterwards made the supreme sacrifice.
