Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Harold was struck in the head by a piece of shell, some way behind the front line, his death witnessed by some of his mates. Harold was buried in the Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, about 5km west of Ypres, well behind the front line, an example of  how dangerous the even the back areas were at Ypres.

His brother, Walter Tom Gooding had been killed in action 4 days previous, on the 26 September 1917 whilst serving with the 29th Battalion AIF during the same battle. The brothers were from Dimboola in Victoria, and their mother was most upset about never receiving any of their personal effects.
